MC & Gifts in Meeting

Texts to Study :

Acts 2,

James 2

1 Cor 11 till 14

⁃1 Cor 11v 1 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ………

….17 But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse.

18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part,

19 for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized.

20 When you come together, it is not the Lord’s supper that you eat.

21 For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, another gets drunk.

22 What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not.

23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread,

24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.

28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.

30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.

31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.

32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.

33 So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another

34 if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home-so that when you come together it will not be for judgment. About the other things I will give directions when I come.

Chapter 12v 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.

2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led.

3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;

5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;

6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.

7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,

9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,

10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.

……..18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.

19 If all were a single member, where would the body be?

20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.

21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.”

22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,

23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty,

24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it,

25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.

26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.

27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.

29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?

30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

Chapter 13 …chapter on love.

Chapter 14 .. V 1 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.

2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.

3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.

4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.

5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.

6 Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?

7 If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played?

8 And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle?

9 So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air.

10 There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning,

11 but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me.

12 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.

13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret.

14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.

15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.

16 Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying?

17 For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up.

18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20 Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.

21 In the Law it is written, “By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.”

22 Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.

23 If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds?

24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all,

25 the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.

26 What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.

27 If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret.

28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God.

29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said.

30 If a revelation is made to another sitting there, let the first be silent.

31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged,

32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets.

33 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,

…….38 If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.

39 So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

40 But all things should be done decently and in order.

⁃Mark 6 (Text for this message : Read Mark 6 v 30 – 45)

⁃Prep yourself: (vs 30-32)

30 The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught.

31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.

32 And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves.

⁃Have been with God

⁃Family in order – no Babies on hip

⁃faith

⁃grooming

⁃focus

⁃Attitude to people  & meeting ( v 34- 36 )

34 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.

35 And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late.

36 Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”

⁃compassion

⁃positive, strong

⁃courage is contagious

⁃Know your crowd- are their unsaved people, what is the dominant age group, what is the most common language spoken, what is their church history like etc

⁃Is glorifying Jesus your main focus? If that is your focus, you will see fleshly manifestation easier

⁃Come with a plan, but come expecting God to mess it up (v 34) 34 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things

⁃talk to your muso, fellow elders before the meeting

⁃have an outline – not a straight jacket

⁃

⁃Get things/ people in place behind the scenes ( v 37-38)

37 But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?”

38 And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”

⁃know who is doing what

⁃know who your atmospheric contact is

⁃

⁃Read when the meeting is peaking and dipping

⁃much like a wave, get off before it dies. And recognize the peaks

⁃

⁃Actual meeting:

⁃opening

⁃start on time

⁃singing

⁃Understand that you are singing to people (proclamation) & to God (intimacy)Eph 5

⁃Silence can be bad:

⁃when you look lost & bewildered

⁃when it gets hijacked by crying babies etc

⁃when 90% of the building is not engaging God

⁃Silence can be amazing:

⁃Gifts/ contributions

⁃work in team let other elders give words

⁃too many words make a meeting ‘swampy‘ (some words are sent to you for your sake(to confirm what you are feeling, some words just come as a distraction- they come from needy/immature people )

⁃remember Jesus taught us to judge a tree by its fruit- the messenger can disqualify the message – be careful who you give the mic to: Not to strangers, the unstable, the causal etc

⁃get the time right, often a prophetic moment is messed up by bad timing

⁃Offering

⁃two mistakes: begging for money/or being flippant about it

⁃if you are going to teach into money, do so after your collection (integrity issue)

⁃to get people to give to you, you need to be generous & teach – not manipulate

⁃breaking of bread

⁃remember the unsaved in the meeting

⁃your method should release people not control them

⁃be real not religious

⁃be glad & sincere (Acts 2)

⁃baptisms

⁃remember this is a celebration

⁃we prefer the question ‘how did you meet Jesus , not why are you getting baptized’

⁃allow room for God to minister

⁃involve everyone – not just people being baptized

⁃use it as a teaching or worship or celebration or salvation moment

⁃baby dedications

⁃dont rush

⁃dont bore the crowd

⁃prophecy, give gifts and father the crowd

⁃testimonies

⁃hear it before you release it

⁃get the timing right..

⁃it must have a purpose & must be short

⁃family issues

⁃use names (don’t have crib notes- fathers remember their kids names)

⁃smile

⁃look people in the eye

⁃tell short, hearty stories

⁃vision announcements

⁃its vision time , not disseminating info time

⁃Be careful where you’re dragging people to: success breeds trust and a willingness to go on another journey

⁃Two at the most three announcements (remember it’s not ‘info download- its vision)

⁃Pick your words- practice- time it- practice again (eccl 12 v 10)

⁃Move people to a clear course of action eg (where to sign up, where to go etc )

⁃In every crowd there will be : head people, heart people emotional people- address each group

⁃head people need to know you have thought things through

⁃heart people need to know it feels right, use names/ stories

⁃Spiritual people will need to know it’s Biblical/ lines up with Gods will/prophecy

⁃base your motivation on values

⁃reach into history (prophetic/ stories) as you lean forward

⁃be positive

⁃Attest God is with you

⁃Introducing preacher

⁃remember many people dont know his name

⁃remember he doesn’t need the Glory, God does

⁃ending

⁃if you have an end time, stick to it

⁃if you need to go over because of ministry, at least release people who need to go

⁃transitions

⁃if you’re using technology, practice to eliminate time delays

⁃think about highs and lows

⁃not everything needs a connecting statement

⁃changing gear is a dangerous time when you’re driving

⁃be decisive

⁃be filled with faith

⁃be clear where you are going

⁃smile / be confident

⁃pull dont push

⁃smile

⁃invite

⁃paint the picture – don’t carry the whip

⁃calls for ministry

⁃it costs people to respond , treat them with dignity

⁃remove the surprise factor, ie let them know what’s happening

⁃handle with love

⁃dont over-kill ( if there is nothing in the stone- don’t try to draw blood)

⁃dont command/ ‘kneel down etc ( if you want prophetic action – lead it yourself and invite, don’t bark instructions)

⁃when technology crashes

⁃smile

⁃dont blame the tech guy

⁃press on with the least amount of commotion

⁃have a back-up plan

⁃learn to celebrate: celebration builds:

⁃smile

⁃tell stories

⁃applaud

⁃use role models

⁃what you get excited about shapes the church

⁃when disturbances come:

⁃work as a team

⁃kill 99% with neglect

⁃the rest sort with love or humour

⁃handling heresy:

⁃publicly declared heresy needs to be sorted out publicly (with strength and love)

⁃what needs to be qualified:

⁃extra-ordinary

⁃humour is a great disarmer (careful not irreverent)

⁃if you have visitors in the meeting (house quirks need to be explained)

⁃delicate issues/ excesses from contributors

⁃eldering from the front row (without the mic)

⁃model passionate worship

⁃talking , goofing around, detached attitude are killers

⁃take the ‘disturbance variables’ out of the game for the MC

⁃messy stage

⁃odd people

⁃smells, temperature

⁃sound issues

⁃babies screaming

⁃Big mistakes in leading a meeting:

⁃assuming that more words = more anointing

⁃not managing causal people

⁃eyes closed

⁃rebuking with the mic

⁃lack of integrity- be funny – but be sincere

⁃religious jargon

⁃drifting

⁃letting the needs of the minority hijack the meeting

⁃being unaware of what God wants to do

⁃speaking to the front row, instead of whole church

⁃being unaware of what the people are feeling

Some questions to ask ?

⁃are the people involved?

⁃is Jesus being glorified?

⁃Are people meeting with God…Is their faith in the house?

the use of the gifts in a meeting.
